While a woman is often judged top be superficial and deeply interested in her outer appearence, a man is considered to be rather free from these pressures. With this work I wish to present an inside and intime look on how a male is tied to similar actions.
I am paying attention especially to hairs of a man and the ways he is preparing them. Often it is all about the looks or about the idea of the looks. This is the case even if all the hair that a man is worried about aren’t visible to others. Preparing the hair, shaving and trimming can be part of normal daily routines. Nevertheless, hair-care is not only substantially important but also stressing and painful, in being mainly pure vanity.
My photographic gaze is serious and worried but at the same time very much ironic and self-critical. How weird and vain it all sounds and looks! And still the man keeps on visually trimming himself. It’s simply funny − and even alarming.
For one year I played with the shaving procedures and photographed myself “in action”. I also collected all the shaved hair into a separate cans and photographed them in a abstracted manner.
